A rebate is a reimbursement to a property owner for part of the cost of a project after it has been completed. Rebates can be used by communities to incentivize their residents to complete floodproofing projects to protect their own property from flood damage. Cost-shares for floodproofing rebates are up to as much as 50% of the homeowners expenses in some communities.

Examples of typical floodproofing projects that are funded through this type of program include:

  • Measures to prevent water from entering a home:
    • Adding downspouts
    • Constructing flood walls
  • Sewer backup projects:
    • installing overhead sewers
    • installing backflow valves
    • removing connections from stormwater sewers
  • Subsurface projects:
    • installing interior or exterior drain tile
    • waterproofing foundation walls
    • fixing cracks in foundation walls.

  2. Alternatively, you can reach out to your local floodplain administrator to find out whether any such opportunities exist in your area.
  3. Find out which types of projects are eligible for the rebate, and the specific rebate limits, homeowner eligibility requirements, and any other restrictions/requirements that apply.
  4. Once you have explored how you can reduce risk on your property (starting with this website) and decided which mitigation strategy(ies) you would like to pursue, compare your project(s) to the list of project types eligible for a rebate in your community.
  5. Apply for the rebate once the project has been completed.

 

Special Considerations:
