Flash flood
Potentially life-threatening type of flood caused by intense rainfall, dam failure, ice jam, or other event. Floodwaters rise and fall rapidly during a flash flood, and there are usually high flow velocities. Flash floods often occur in highly urbanized areas where pavements and other impervious surfaces increase amount of runoff. Ongoing flooding can become flash flooding in cases where heavy rainfall causes a rapid surge of rising floodwaters.
