Flood opening

A Flood Opening is a passive opening used to equalize hydrostatic loads on enclosure walls below the Base Flood Elevation. If enclosure walls are not designed to relieve the floodwater pressures with flood openings, the walls can be damaged or fail causing collapse of the building. There are two FEMA/NFIP recognized flood openings, non-engineered and engineered.
