Grade beam

A support member cast as an integral part of the slab foundation, as opposed to a separate footing. It is thicker than the slab and acts as a footing to provide stability, often under load-bearing or critical structural walls. Grade beams are occasionally installed to provide lateral support for vertical foundation members where they enter the ground.
