Limit of Moderate Wave Action (LiMWA)

Line shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps indicating the inland limit of the area affected by breaking waves greater than 1.5 feet during the design flood. The area between the LiMWA and the V zone boundary is known as the “Coastal A zone.” FEMA began delineating the LiMWA on coastal FIRMs in 2009 and requires all new flood studies in coastal areas to include it on their flood maps. During a flood event, it may experience damage from waves, velocity flows, erosion, scour, or combinations of these forces.
