Pile (or piling)

Vertical support member of a building that is driven or jetted into the ground and supported primarily by friction between the pilings and the surrounding earth. Pilings are usually long and slender in shape and made of wood, steel, or precast concrete. They are best used in areas where high velocity flooding can cause scouring around the foundation.
