Flood Insurance Study (FIS)

Engineering study performed by FEMA to identify flood hazard areas, flood insurance risk zones, water surface elevations of the 100-year flood (in some cases) and supporting technical data; the Flood Boundary and Floodway Map (if applicable); as well as determination of mudslide and/or flood-related erosion hazards. It is used to develop the Flood Insurance Rate Map. (Note: The National Flood Insurance Program regulations refer to Flood Insurance Studies as “flood elevation studies.”)
